Our online Classic Reading Clubs are back, and we’ve made them simpler, more focused and easier to fit around family life. The first sessions start on Monday 12 October and Saturday 17 October, and places are limited to 12 children per group.
Why classic texts matter for the 11 Plus
Many 11 Plus and independent school entrance papers use extracts from classic literature. These older stories are written very differently from the books most children read today. The sentences are longer, the vocabulary is unfamiliar, and much of the meaning sits beneath the surface. A child who reads confidently at home can still lose marks because the language feels foreign on the day.
The answer is regular, guided practice with exactly these kinds of texts, so the style becomes familiar long before exam day. That is what our reading clubs are for.
What’s new this term
- One focused session a week. Children now join a single weekly session, with time in between to reread the story at home.
- Separate year groups. Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 each have their own groups, so the texts and the pace are pitched at the right level.
- A choice of day. Every year group has a Monday evening group and a Saturday morning group, so you can choose what suits your family.
- The full Geek Readers Bookshelf. Every member gets their year group’s collection of classic books to read online or download and keep.
What happens in each session
Each week, a Geek School English tutor reads a passage from a classic book with the group, live on Zoom. Together they unpick what the passage means, explore the new vocabulary, and practise the inference skills that exam comprehension questions test. Children then take the story home to reread before the next session.
The timetable
